Going to Mexico to get dental work done.
I just found out that I need to have a root canal and a crown. To make matters worse I am being told that I need to have the root canal done by a specialist. That although they did the root canal before for me on a different tooth. They are telling me that they can not do it on this tooth. I do not understand why, a root canal is a root canal. What is up with that?
My insurance does not cover for me to see a specialist. I am also being told by the insurance company that I may max out my anual limit with the crown since I have already had work done this year. I called around and right now I am looking at around $1600.00 for the root canal and crown. I feel as if I am being pushed out by the dental office and the insurance company is not helping me at all.
I have been talking to a friend of mine that says that I should just go to Mexico to have the work done. That she had dental work done there and it would be only about 400.00 -600.00 to get what I need. I live in California so going would not be to much of a problem since I can drive there. I am just thinking this may be the best way to go. Wondering what others think about this.

You do seem to be a little stuck right now. I would advise to really think things over before making a decisions. I am not saying that going to Mexico for your dental work would be a bad thing. However, you may want to think about these questions first.
You said your friend went to Mexico for dental work. Well how long ago was that? If it was a while ago the prices that she is saying may not be correct.
Do you know if the dentist that she went to is still there? If not, what dentist are you going to go to? I would guess you would need to make an appointment to see their dentist.
Do you speak Spanish? If not, are you going to have someone with you that does? It is important that if you are going to Mexico to have your dental work done, that you are able to talk to the dentist that will be doing the work. Do not assume that they are going to be able to speak English.
Lastly, I am sure that dentist in Mexico are just as good or as bad as dentist in the US. The one main difference as I see it is that in the US you have some recourse if work goes bad. In Mexico if a dentist does bad work oh well not to sure you would be able to do much of anything. So just keep that in mind when deciding your risk factors.

Not all root canals are the same. It seems like to me that you are upset with your dentist. You should be happy that you have a dentist that know their limits. If your general dentist is stating that in this case your root canal needs to be done by a specialist, it is because your dentist know it goes beyond what a general dentist will do.
Did you ask why your root canal was different this time? Normally the dentist will explain to you why they feel that you should see a specialist. I do not think that your dentist is pushing you out at all. The dentist did the right thing.
