The dental health side effects of smoking.
I have heard that smokers have a higher risk of developing different dental health problems. I know smoking can stains your teeth and causes bad breath. What I am wondering is how does smoking cause cavities and gum disease? What may be other dental health side effect from smoking ?
Please I only want to know about the dental side of this issue. I have a friend that I care for who is a smoker. She knows the health risks but does not care. She does care about her teeth but does not think smoking is bad for them since she able to keep the white with whiting strips.

Maybe it will help if you let your friend know how smoking may lead to these following oral health issues.
Besides bad breath and stained teeth. Smokers may have an increased build up of plaque and tartar, bone loss within the jaw. Smokers increase their odds of having gum disease, which increases the chance of tooth loss.
Smoking may also delay the body healing process. This can effect ones teeth when having a tooth extraction, deep cleaning to oral surgery.
Smokers may think that they could get dental implants to fix the stated problems. However smoking may lower their success rate.
There is also the risk of developing lung or oral cancer
I do not know if this information will help you, but best of luck

I had a Aunt that would smoke at least a pack of cigarettes a day. She also did not worry about any health care issues that came with smoking. She did not worry about her teeth either.
Although they did not have whiten strips in her day, she did brush and floss as well as chew gum. By doing that her teeth was not really stained, and breath smelled of gum or mints. In short she died of lung and throat cancer.
There is so much on the internet about all the health issues that smoking can cause. If your friend is willing to listen to you then I suggest looking for photos of bad teeth and gum’s cause by smoking. There many photos on line, you can show her. A photo is a good why to get her to see what happens not just hear about it.
