Braces and Headgear
Braces, headgear, and retainers what’s next
I am so tired of having to have braces. It has been such a pain. I now have to start wearing a retainer. After three years of braces and headgears. I thought it would be over. NO now I have to wear top retainers for like a year or more. I know my parents are only trying to do what is best for me. However, just how important is it that I have to wear the retainer now? Can I get away with wearing it only when I sleep? The less I have to wear it the better.

- My retainer has been dirty for a long while. How can I clean it? Consult your dentist that gave you the retainer. Since you went so long with out wearing it, it may now not fit correctly. You also stated that it was made out of plastic. Plastic is porous so it retains dirt and stains. Using products that are not designed for retainers may not be a good [...]...

Ha Ha I so hear what you are saying Cat. I too was sick of having my braces by the time I got them off the retainer was the last thing I wanted to start having to wear all the time.
I would never have it in when I was at school. only when I was at home did I have it in so that my parents would not know that I was not wearing it like I should. I thought what the big deal I had it in at night when I slept.
Okay so here was the problem. My teeth started to shift I did not even notice it at first but my retainer was getting harder and harder to put in. When I went to my orthodontic appointment. My dentist knew right away.
My parents where pissed off to say the least. I was a little scared too thinking that I would have to go back into braces. Lucky for me I got my retainer adjusted and was able to just continue with my retainer.
So I would advise wearing it as directed to you by your dentist. Unless you want to upset your parents and possibly go back into braces.

Having to wear braces, headgear and now a retainer can be a pain as you said. However, you have been in the braces for three years now.
What is the big deal about wearing a retainer. A retainer is nothing like the braces or headgear. It is just a wire to keep your teeth in a lineament why they adjust to not having the braces keep them in place.
I personally would not want to run the risk of my teeth shifting now after all the time spent in braces. Would you?

Before going ahead with only wearing your retainer while you sleep. I would suggest you at least talk to your orthodontic dentist.
Tell you dentist how you feel but hear out what your dentist is telling you. There is a reason why the dentist may be saying to you that you need to wear your retainer during the day too.
It really is for your own good. The dentist and your parents just want you to be able to have nice teeth. Try to keep that in mind when making any choices on your own.

Have you talked out your feeling with your parents? After all up till now they have been the ones paying for your braces so that you can have good teeth.
They just may have something to say about how wearing a retainer is a pain for you.
Or maybe you should just try and see the bigger picture and deal with what life hands you. There is going to be more bumps in the road beside just a retainer.

These people are so one sided. I was just like you I got tired of wearing my retainer all the time. In fact if I could have taken off my braces whenever I wanted to, I would have.
I only wore my retainer when I slept. Nothing happen to me. The world did not end and my teeth did not shift. The only thing I had to put up with was my mom nagging me about wearing my retainer. lol
