Your dentist is correct. Now that you know you have gum disease you just need to make sure your are cleaning your teeth more then before.
Brush after every meal. Make sure you are flossing I would say twice a day but at least once. Another thing you can do is use mouthwash that fights gingivitis.

Yea you just need to start taking better care of your teeth. It is good that you will be going to the dentist for a clean four times a year but do not slack off because you are going to the dentist more now.
Continue to brush and floss two times daily. You will not lose your teeth if you take care of your teeth and gums now. Do not let it get worse.

I know how you are feeling, I have the same issue as you do. I have to go to the dentist now four times a year to make sure my teeth say free from tarter.
I now try and really be mindful about flossing. That was my down fall. I flossed but really not like I should. My dentist was like you can brush all you want but it is the flossing that keeps gingivitis away.
