Can you use Toothpaste to fix dvd’s and video games?

I heard that if you have a dvd or video game that is scracth up you can use toothpaste to repair them and it works like new.  If so what toothpast brand do you use?  Which is the best.  Do you use any kind of toothpaste?  I would like to know since I have a few dvd’s that are mesed up.
