Going to the dentist

I am in really bad pain.  My back molar is killing me and I am going to the dentist tomorrow it is the soonest he can get me in.   What will the dentist do for my pain?  I never had a tooth  ache so I am not sure what a dentist will do.  I am thinking I may need a root canal or at least a filling or something.   Will that stop the pain once it is done?   What can I do now until tomorrow to help cut the pain?  Please any advise is welcomed
