Could be just a cold sore. They hurt like a bugger but normally will clear up on their own. I get them once in a while in the back of my mouth too. So it can be hard to see. Your dentist can spot it and advise if it is a cold sore or not.

If you never had any gum problems before and you know that they are in good shape then it does kind of sounds like a cold sore or canker sore of some type both of which will clear up.

It could just feel like it is your gum hurting and it be really a toothache. You may want to try using Orajel to numb up the gum a little where it hurts. Also you could try taking and aspirin or something like that for the pain.
I hope all goes well with your dental appointment.
