First step is by calling them. Although you are not talking to the dentist having a good front office staff is important since this will be your first impression of the place.
Any dental office you call should be able to answer your general questions in a friendly manor. If they are too busy to talk to you over the phone for less then five minutes why you ask them simple questions move on to the next listing.
You know your area the best so that may be a factor for you in picking a dental office. Surely you do not want to go to an area you do not feel save in regardless of how great the dentist may be.
Now since you have a toothache now driving down to the different office may not work for you since you want to take care of your toothache ASAP. With that said you can still do some research about a dental office on line. See if there are any good or bad reviews on them.
In the end when going to any one new it is a risk. However I like to think there are still very few bad dentist

You did not state whether or not you have any dental insurance, but if you do make sure the dentist you want to go to takes your plan.
Another thing you may want to do is shop out some of your cost. A dental office can not tell you how much it would cost you to fix your tooth without seeing you. However, there are some set cost you can ask about, such as office visit charges and X-rays cost. It is almost a given that you will have at least that much done on your first visit to any dentist.
