Wow Yee, that last dentist does sound like a jerk. I think most dentist are understanding about people fears. It is not uncommon after all for people to be afraid of going to the dentist.
With so many people not liking or fearing the dentist, the dentist start to learn hot to deal better with their patients.
When looking for a dentist who can be more understanding to your needs, before booking an appointment, tell the staffing that you are scared of going to the dentist and you want to make sure the dentist there is understanding to that.

Do not feel alone. There are many people that have dental fears. I would say the for the most part dentist should know and understand peoples fears.
It sounds like to me changing dentist is a good idea. Even if your dentist does good work. It is important to be kind and not make people feel bad about themselves.
There are tons of dentist out there make some phone calls and see how you feel about going to a new dentist. Remember you can always change dentists until you find the one you like

At some point if you are an adult you need to get over it. There is nothing to be scared of the dentist is doing what is necessary for your own oral health.
If you are scared about going then you need to let the dentist know this ahead of time. They are not mind readers. Letting the dentist know your fears will allow them to treat you like a kid if that is what you want.
