Second dental opinion, Tips on getting a second dental opinion
I went to the local dentist a few days ago. It was the first time going to the dentist in two years. Since I did not have a regular dentist I just went to one out of the phone book. I was quoted about $500.00 worth of dental work that the dentist stated I needed to have done. It is not so much I doubt what he is saying I need. I know it has been some time since I last been to the dentist I figured I may need more dental work then just a cleaning.
My really questions is how do I know I am getting the best rate? If I shop out the dental work do I have to go into each dental office for a check up and a second opinion or can I get cost over the phone? I would like a second opinion without having to pay for the check up and X-rays each time. What do I need to do to get the information I am looking for. Do not want to have to pay more for dental work then necessary.

Since the first dentist gave you a treatment plan look on the brake down of services. It should have the dental services listed by ADA codes.
Then all you need to do is shop out ADA codes. When you call the next dentist you would ask what is their cost for ADA code XXXX. That way you are comparing the cost for the services the first dentist has already said you needed.
Now keep in mind some dentist opinions may very on the work they may suggest that you have done. But at least you will have some idea of cost.

Sometimes if you feel that the cost in within reason to your budget then shopping it out for a few more dollars may not be worth your time.
I would rather go to a dentist that I can trust and pay a little more for then one that I do not know that is a little cheaper.

Really I do not see that you want a second opinion more then you are just trying to shop out cost. One would normally get a second opinion if they feel the dental work their dentist is suggesting does not seem with in reason.
It sounds more like cost of the services you are questioning. It it about cost then you do need the ADA codes to compare cost for equal services.
My suggestion is unless you find a dentist that is much more affordable to stay with your current dentist if you like them.
