I am not sure where your friend got their information about dentist ripping you off if you do not have dental insurance? In many cases dentist will lower their cost to you if you are paying in cash not raise it.
Reason being is that they do not have to file out claims and they get paid at the time services are render. Therefore many dentist will offer a cash discount.

I am not sure about the whole dentist ripping you off thing either. There are many good dentist that really do care about the work that they are doing.
Now if you need a low cost dentist look into going to a dental clinic or a dental school. They both will normally offer much lower cost for their dental services.
