Will dental insurance cover having a second opinion?
I have dental insurance and it is a PPO. Trying to stay within the network since I do get better coverages that way I picked a dentist from their plan provider list. I have never been to this dentist before and it had be a little over a year since I have seen a dentist.
I went in for my basic X-rays and cleaning deal and was told that I have three cavities. One of them being very large that the dentist told me I should have it crowned. Adding crown cost and what my plan will cover I am still looking at a cost to me of around $575.00. This is an added expense that I was not expecting to have when my teeth do not even hurt me. I would think if I had all that going on I would have know it.
I would like to know if I had a second opinion from another dentist would dental insurance normally cover for that? I am not sure and it does not say any thing about it in the packet information they gave to me.

I would think you would be able to get a second opinion but if you had to have new set of X-rays you may have to pay for them check you plan on that normally you get one set a year.
Also most insurance companies offer a member services line call them and confirm you benefits see what they have to say about getting an second dental opinion.

My dental insurance would always cover me to get a second opinion. I just have my X-rays transferred over to the other dental office so I am not having to have them done again.
But really what you said you needed sound reasonable to me. For three filling and a crown 575 is not bad. Unless you just feel you do not need the work at all. Keep in mind though a lot of things can happen when you have not seen a dentist in over a year.

A dentist can discover cavities that you did not even know you have since cavities do not always have to hurt. I would not bases your trust that just because you do not have any pain there is no cavities.
I am not saying not to get a second opinion. When in doubt it is a good idea. Just be willing to accept that by not going to the dentist for your regular check ups you may have cavities that you where not aware of.
