Dental care for six cavities on baby teeth.
My friend five year old was told that he has at least five cavities. She was told this by the schools nurse. So no X-rays were done or anything. My friend thinks the nurse if full of it but is worried about her son teeth. She as not taken him to see a dentist yet.
Money is partly the issue since her X-husband is not helping her like he should. I told her my dentist is really good guy and will cut her some slack on the cost but she needs to pay in full which she just can not do right now Any other advise that someone can suggest.

There is a limited room for you to get involved in your friend’s child dental care. Even though you may have the best intentions. Be careful your friend does not turn on you.
You stated that her son is five and he yet to see dentist? Why should it be a shocker that he has cavities that can be detected without X-rays. I bet he may even have more once a dentist is able to do X-rays to catch even the smaller ones.
I personal really hate the excuse that it always about money and that why someone not taking care of their business.
That is a cop out. There are very good low cost dental HMO plans that for a couple are as little as $24.00 a month. If that is too high some of the HMO dental insurance plan may write a minor by himself at as low as $10.00 a month.
And guess what many of these HMO plans offer FREE X-rays office visits and cleanings. Did she even once try to look into getting dental insurance for her son?
Even saying she can not afford a $10 dental plan there are still dental clinics that she many be able to take her son to and based on her low income status possibly get dental care for her son for free.
You may be able to suggest some of this to your friend but I would be limited into how much you get involve before she treats you like the school nurse.

Well it is hard to say that the school nurse if full of it when she has not taken her son to see a dentist and he is already five.
Most dentist will tell you that you should take your child to see a dentist when their first tooth is cut or at least when they are one year old. Child dental care is so important.
I not saying that the school nurse can not be wrong. They are only checking what they can see and they are not dentist. However if would feel that her son has so many cavities it is a good idea to go to a dentist to check and see what the real dental issues may be.
If she really can not afford to get a low cost dental insurance plan like an HMO or even a dental discount plan then I would suggest her looking for either a dental school or dental clinics that may be able to help her at a lower cost.
