Understanding Supplemental Dental Insurance. Supplemental dental insurance is an individual or family insurance policy purchased to cover a portion of the dental costs. Supplemental dental insurance will normally not cover the entire dental care procedure.
If you have a primary dental insurance plan that you purchased or your employer provided, the supplemental dental policy typically covers the remaining dental bill. For example, if the dental plan policy covers half of the dental cost, the secondary or supplement dental insurance plan should cover the remaining balance of your dental procedure.
A supplement dental insurance plan may also be purchased to cover the dental charges when there are annual dental benefit plan limits or exclusions.

I found that trying to find two dental plans that really help to work together to save you money is very hard. I had to find a dentist willing to take to dental plans and then always stay on top of the claims process to make sure the dental office was filing them out right.
I can save you money on your dental care needs but make sure you have a dental office that know what you are trying to do and make sure you are not paying more just for the cost of having a secondary plan.
That was a key factor many of the plans my dentist would also take were so costly the saving was not there when trying to combine to plans together.
In short do your home work when thinking about going this route and know each plans terms and conditions so you can stay on top of any claims and cost issues.
