Toothbrush question, can this really be true?
My friend told me that the first toothbrush was invented by this guy that was in jail. Then he marketed it when he got out and made a bunch of money. I asking because my friend says many things that I find out later is not completely correct. Any coments to my question would be great.

Your friend may have been referring to William Addis back in 1770 he was in a England’s jail. I forget the reason but I sure you can look it up. Any way he was trying to come up with an idea on how to make a living after he got out of jail.
While trying to clean his teeth with a rag he came up with the idea that became the first tooth brush. This brush was made out of a bone which he put holes into and some hard bristles, guess to be from a broom and given to him by a guard in the prison at the time. This is what he use to clean his teeth with in jail so when he got out he did start a company to make tooth brushes. This was a big success, and has been stated to be the first toothbrush.

William Addis was the one to first mass produce a tooth brush however he was far from being the first to come up with the idea of the toothbrush.
The toothbrush can be dated as far back as 3000 BC. Ancient civilizations used a thin twig which they would have frayed the end, and use the frayed part to brush there teeth with.
China invented a tooth bush very close to want we would use today around 1498. The bristles were taken from a hog neck and the handle would have been made from bone or bamboo.
The tooth brush history goes on from there as we know already about William Addis.
America first patten the toothbrush in 1857 and massed produce around 1885. With that being said one of the first electric tooth brush that came out to the American market was in 1960
