Toothpaste: Toothpaste is a paste or gel dentifrice used with a toothbrush as an accessory to clean and maintain the health of teeth. Dental Opinions, Is Kissing Dangerous to Your Health?

Posted on May. 11th 2011 by Dental Plan Reviews in Hygiene Comments Off on Dental Opinions, Is Kissing Dangerous to Your Health?

Dental Opinions, Is Kissing Dangerous to Your Health? Oddly enough yes. Studies have shown that bacteria that causes tooth decay can be transmitted via a open mouth kiss. With in one kiss you can share over 500 different types of disease causing germs and viruses.

This means that cavities can become contagious however, it is normally only an issue if the person you are kissing has several cavities a year which can be a sign that he or she may have an above average bacteria count.  However there is no reason to stop kissing all together.

Before a kissing try brushing your teeth or rinsing out your mouth with mouth wash. Not convenient, then chew on some sugar free gum or drink a glass of water. If you feel your partner may be an issue you can always brush and floss your own teeth afterwords.

In short kissing is fine.  This is just another reminder as to way having good oral health care is important not just for yourself but for your partner as well.  So keep brushing at least twice a day and floss daily and see your dentist at least twice a year.  A clean mouth and fresh breath makes for nicer kisses anyway.

Opinions on dental hygiene

Posted on Oct. 1st 2010 by Dental Plan Review in Hygiene Comments Off on Opinions on dental hygiene

I am currently a sophomore in college.  I have been planing on becoming a dental hygienist since I was 15. Now that it is getting closer for me to start applying  for the dental hygienist programs and the classes I will be needing, I am starting to have some doubts.

I was hoping this being a dental website if anyone know how boring doing the same thing everyday gets to be.  How stressful is going to dental hygiene school?   Is it really a good job to be getting into?

Dental care, Help I have horrible teeth

Posted on Aug. 12th 2010 by Dental Plan Review in Hygiene Comments Off on Dental care, Help I have horrible teeth

I am seventeen right now and I have very horrible teeth.  When I was younger I have to admit I did not have good oral hygiene.  I was really bad at taking care of them but I am paying for that now. My teeth are very yellow and I even have some brown spots.  They also are a little crooked that I would think braces should fix.

My mom  will not do anything for my teeth beside fix a cavity and that is only if she has too.  I can not really blame her because I had very bad baby teeth and she told me that I needed to start taking care of my teeth or she would not have them fixed.   I was just a kid so I did not care back then.  My parents paid out alot of money for my teeth care and now will not put any more money towards my teeth unless I am in very bad pain.

What can I do since I can not go to the dentist on my own?  I hate my teeth and I hate to smile or laugh in frount of anyone.   Please help I have total changed my ways and do take good care of my teeth but I feel without seeing a dentist,  I am just too late to think brushing going help me now.

Can bad teeth be an inherited trait

Posted on Apr. 26th 2010 by Dental Plan Review in Dental Help, Hygiene Comments Off on Can bad teeth be an inherited trait

I am fourteen years old and I am wanting to know if having bad teeth and gums are an inherited trait?  Both my parents and even my grand parents have bad teeth.  I had lots of issues with my baby teeth.  I had at least a dozen cavities that had to be filled when I had my baby teeth.

My Adult teeth seem to be okay for now but I am worried latter on in life I am going to have bad teeth.  I do not what to have to go to the dentist all the time like my parents.  They go to the dentist at least four to five times a year.  What is the chance that I will have jacked up teeth because my parents do?

Brushing and flossing habbits

Posted on Mar. 22nd 2010 by Dental Plan Review in Dental Help, Hygiene Comments Off on Brushing and flossing habbits

I think my friend is too much and needs help.  Really she is my best friend but is always brushing and flossing her teeth after very little thing.  The brushing is not so bad because she has to do that in a rest room.   She will brush after eating anything and then run to the rest room to brush.  Even if the rest room is dirty she will still brush her teeth.

It is the flossing she will floss right in front of you. While you are eating or talking to her.  She had to be told by our teacher more then once to stop flossing in class and to pay attention.   I asked her why she has  to do that so much.  That you only need to brush twice and floss once a day.

She is well I do not want bad teeth like my mom.  That her mom had to have all her teeth pulled out by the time she was 26.  I am like whatever but I do not want you doing it in front of me while we hang out.

My question is how much times it too many times.  I though it I could prove to her she that brushing and flossing too much could hurt her teeth too that it may help her slow down with doing it every 15 minutes of the day.

What to do for bad breath, Please help

Posted on Feb. 3rd 2010 by Dental Plan Reviews in Dental Help, Hygiene Comments Off on What to do for bad breath, Please help

Bad Breath

I have never had a cavity, I do not drink soda nor do I smoke.  I also do not have braces and have very healthy teeth and gums as per my last dental check up only two months ago.   The thing is I do have horrible bad breath.
I do not know why. I brush my teeth twice a day morning and night.  I use mouthwash and I brush my tongue too.  I floss once to twice a day but still have this really bad breath.  It came to the point that I carry a little bottle of Listerine on me and I am always chewing gum or mints.
I hate taking to people up close and although I have a boy friend I do not get to close to him either because of my breath.  Going to school is a pain because I am always worried about my breath and people craking jokes about me behind my back.  I am at loss as to what to do.  I know it is not my teeth or gums and I really do not think it has to do with the foods I am eating. Can you give me advise on what are some other reasons for bad breath.  That way I might have a change to do something about it.   I need all the information you can give me.

Keeping your dental cost low

Posted on Jan. 26th 2010 by Dental Plan Review in Dental Help, Hygiene Comments Off on Keeping your dental cost low

One of easiest ways to help reduce your dental cost is to simply have good dental hygiene.

Ways to clean and reduce cavities.

Studies have suggested that dental hygiene remains at the bottom of the health care duties compared to taking a bath or washing your hair.

How often should I brush my teeth?

Brush your teeth with a fluoride toothpaste at least twice a day for 2-3 minutes, especially before bedtime.

How to reduce gum disease and tooth decay?

Flossing your teeth helps remove plaque in between your teeth where a toothbrush cannot reach. Mouthwash helps reduce bacteria in your mouth which helps to reduce tooth decay. Be sure to visit your dentist every six months for a professional teeth cleaning.

Is it okay to brush longer

I just think that two minutes is really not all that long.  Can you really clean your teeth good in only two minutes?  I brush for about five to six minutes.  Well brushing longer be bad for your tooth enamel?

How do you achieve good breath

What is the best toothpaste to use for maintaining good breath.  So far all the toothpaste that I use only keep my breath fresh for a few hours at best.  What do you have to do to maintain fresh breath throughout the whole day?  I do not like chewing gum so to I have to keep eating mints all the time?  What is a good way to have fresh breath all day?

How do you have good oral health

Proper oral hygiene

Okay so I know that one has to brush their teeth twice a day and floss but is there a correct and wrong way to brush and floss?   Are there more things that need to be done beside just brushing and flossing?  I have to write about oral hygiene for a class I am taking but I really only know to brush and floss.  What else is there?

Expired Listerine mouthwash

Posted on Jan. 2nd 2010 by Dental Plan Review in Dental Help, Hygiene Comments Off on Expired Listerine mouthwash

Okay so I just notice that I have been using expired Listerine mouthwash.  The mouthwash expired in 7/2009.  So it is really old.  I have been using it for the last two week.  Should I be worried?   I do not feel sick and it did not taste different but a little worried about it being so old and using it.

Root Canal Treatment FAQs

Posted on Dec. 30th 2009 by Dental Plan Reviews in ADA Codes, Administrative, Braces, Cavities, Dental Help, Extractions, General News, Hygiene, Oral Surgery Comments Off on Root Canal Treatment FAQs

Your dentist uses root canal treatment to find the cause and then treat problems of the tooth’s soft core (the dental pulp). Years ago, teeth with diseased or injured pulps were removed. Today, root canal treatment has given dentists a safe way of saving teeth.

What is the dental pulp?

The pulp is the soft tissue that contains nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue. It lies within the tooth and extends from the crown of the tooth to the tip of the root in the bone of the jaws.

What happens if the pulp gets injured?

An abscessed (infected) tooth caused by tooth decay. When the pulp is diseased or injured and can’t repair itself, it dies. The most common cause of pulp death is a cracked tooth or a deep cavity. Both of these problems can let germs (bacteria) enter the pulp. Germs can cause an infection inside the tooth. Left without treatment, pus builds up at the root tip, in the jawbone, forming a “pus-pocket” called an abscess. An abscess can cause damage to the bone around the teeth.

Why does the pulp need to be removed?

When the infected pulp is not removed, pain and swelling can result. Certain byproducts of the infection can injure your jaw bones. Without treatment, your tooth may have to be removed.

What does treatment involve?

Treatment often involves from one to three visits. During treatment, your general dentist or endodontist (a dentist who specializes in problems of the pulp) removes the diseased pulp. The pulp chamber and root canal(s) of the tooth are then cleaned and sealed.

Here’s how your tooth is saved through treatment:

  1. First, an opening is made through the crown of the tooth.
  2. An opening is made through the crown of the tooth into the pulp chamber.
  3. The pulp is then removed. The root canal(s) is cleaned and shaped to a form that can be filled.
  4. The pulp is removed, and the root canals are cleaned, enlarged and shaped.
  5. Medications may be put in the pulp chamber and root canal(s) to help get rid of germs and prevent infection.
  6. A temporary filling will be placed in the crown opening to protect the tooth between dental visits. Your dentist may leave the tooth open for a few days to drain. You might also be given medicine to help control infection that may have spread beyond the tooth.
  7. The pulp chamber and root canals are filled and sealed.
  8. The temporary filling is removed and the pulp chamber and root canal(s) are cleaned and filled.
  9. In the final step, a gold or porcelain crown is usually placed over the tooth. If an endodontist performs the treatment, he or she will recommend that you return to your family dentist for this final step.
  10. The crown of the tooth is then restored.

How long will the restored tooth last?

Your restored tooth could last a lifetime, if you continue to care for your teeth and gums. However, regular checkups are necessary. As long as the root(s) of a treated tooth are nourished by the tissues around it, your tooth will remain healthy.
