Where did the Tooth Fairy come from

How did we get to have a Tooth Fairy

My son is going on six and the is first tooth is about to come out.  So I start hearing him talk about the tooth fairy coming and taking away is tooth and giving him money.  Okay he got this from his daycare/preschool kids or something.  There was no tooth fairy thing for me.

I asked my wife and she said yes that it is like Santa Clause or the Easter Bunny.  It is not about the money but where the heck did  tooth fairy thing come from?  Why would that even get started.? Who wants someone else’s teeth?  This does not seem like a good thing to me.  I thought it was just a scary movie or something.  My son is my only child so this tooth fairy business is new to me.  I would truly like to know more about it before I just follow along with it.

  1. Andrew Gollab Says:

Since fairies are generally in folklore tales and songs, it is reasonable to think the legend of the tooth fair would have come from a folklore.

Based on that the tooth fairy tale could have started some where in England or Ireland. The mythical fairy go as far back as the medieval days. Fairy were widespread, especially among the Celtic peoples.

May different cultures had their own way of getting rid of teeth from burying, to burning that your can google and read about.

However in short the tooth fairy is just a fun myth to be regarded as no more than children entertainment.

Your wife is right. The tooth fairy is just another Easter Bunny or Santa. If you are okay with your son believing in them, then there should not be any problems with the the Tooth Fairy.

Who really cares were the wacky idea of having a fairy pay for teeth. Maybe it came from the Vikings. Researchers claim the Viking had a tooth fee. This fee was given to children upon the use of a tooth. They would then use the teeth to make jewelery.

If I had to tell my child something I would stay with the tooth fairy then the Vikings story.

To me there is a benefit of having a child go with the tooth fairy story. Some children many not want to give up their baby teeth. The tooth fairy story make it easy to get a child to easily give up the baby teeth. Just my opinion on that.

I am one of those mean parents that told her kids that the tooth fairy is just a fun myth. Both my husband and I did not do the tooth fairy thing. We did not think it was so important that our daughter or son would miss out on not doing it either.

We told them that losing their baby teeth is just one of many steps in becoming a young adult. That they are not meant to be kept or they would not have fallen out.

They were more then happy just to toss them away. No money needed.

Whether or not you tell your son that there is or is not a tooth fairy is up to you. I let my daughter do the tooth fairy thing and when I felt it was time to speak more about it, I found this very good book called “Throw your tooth on the roof, tooth traditions from around the world.” in it, it goes over how each country as adapted the tooth fairy story and how it is different depending on the country. You may find it helpful to you.
