Worried about my Dentist

Posted on Monday, Apr. 12th 2010 2:20 PM by Dental Plan Reviews in Cavities, Dental Help, Dentists 5 Comments »

The other  day I went to my dentist for my six month cleaning.  I had no X-rays taken since they already took them the last time I was in six months ago.  At that time my teeth had no cavities and I just got my cleaning.  This time however after my cleaning was does my dentist comes to look at my teeth and pokes around. Then stated I have to cavities.  They were small but should be filled.

My thing is how would he know with out taking any new X-rays.  He is saying that they are really small and just a one service filling would be done on both.  If  they are small how can he see them.  I was a little put off by this news since I was fine six months ago and he did not take any new X-rays.  What up?  Should I just trust him.  I do not even really know him since his assistant is the one that always cleans my teeth.

You can get a cavity or cavities in six months that is not unheard of. A dentist can feel the cavity with the tools that they use. However speaking in only my personal experience when a dentist feels that you may have a cavity they normally will take an X-ray to confirm.

I would say if you if you are concern about him not taking an X-ray, call the office and ask him why. Give him a chance. He may have noticed them on the prior X-rays but they were to small to address at the time.

If you still do not like the answer giving get a second opinion. I would advise not having any work done until you feel right about it.

If you are worried about your dentist and what he advises for you to have done, then get a second opinion.

The whole story seems odd to me. I never had a dentist tell me that I had cavities and not do an X-rays to confirm. Maybe he has a car payment due.

You stated you had X-rays six months ago. Now I am not speaking about all dental insurance policies, but for the ones I have been on I only got one set of X-rays per year.

That being said, that may be why he did not take more X-rays. If he did the cost for them could have been on you. It is also possible for you to get two cavities in six months. You stated these are small cavities.

Dentist have the tools that can detect cavities small or otherwise. In fact sometimes that is the only way to find a small cavity because X-rays sometimes do not show everything like you may think they do.

Whether or not you fix your cavities are up to you but I do not think there is anything fishy going on with your dentist.

Yea right I once had a dentist tell me I had four cavities. He also did not take any new X-rays. No way was I going to start doing dental work Willy Nilly.

I went to have a second opinion. To find out that after the X-rays were taken by the second dentist, that he said I had seven cavities. I went back to the first dentist. Better the devil you know then the one you don’t.
