Start with know your family dental needs. In order to choose the best plan type you need to have an idea of what your own dental needs are.
Something like if you need a low cost dental insurance plan maybe a dental HMO plan would be best. Or if you are wanting to stay with a dentist you may need to get a dental PPO or indemnity plan which lets you go outside the plan network of provider or see any dental provider you want.
Maybe you have a current dental need that has to be address ASAP therefore a dental discount plan my be the better choice since they start with in the next business day with no waiting periods for dental services.
All of these are just a few reasons why knowing a little of what you are looking for will help you rule in or out certain plan types.

What John said was true. It is too hard to give you direction when you do not stay a little of what you think you may want in a dental plan.
However this website offers all the different dental plan types in most states. So may I suggest reviewing the different plans offer here and seeing how they work.
