I have a Painful toothache please help.

I have very sensitive teeth and I do use toothpaste for that problem but it dose not seem to help much.  Now my front two teeth on the top  are starting to hurt me whenever I have anything cold  even cold air hurts them.  This is really starting to be a problem for me.  I do not know if I have a cavities or if it is just my teeth becoming even more sensitive. I had a friend tell me I may  need a root canal.  I  am not sure now what is wrong.
