Is dental insurance you get though work, different then dental insurance you get on your own

I have always gotten dental insurance though my work.  With the changing of my jobs they offer only health insurance and not dental.   I would like to know if what you get though work is any different than the plans you can buy on line for yourself.   If so in what way?
