Monitoring Your Infant’s Fluoride Intake
If you add fluoridated water to your infant’s baby formula, you may be putting your child at risk of developing dental fluorosis, a harmless cosmetic condition manifested by brown, mottled or discolored enamel.
Even though fluoride is necessary to prevent tooth decay, too much fluoride can discolor baby teeth. Most ready-to-feed formulas contain infant-safe levels of fluoride, however, formulas that require water can increase this level since community sources usually contain the highest amount of fluoride proven to be beneficial in preventing tooth decay. Therefore when using formula that requires water, use bottled water that is low in fluoride or fluoride free or filtrated tap water.
